Question
Chapter 4, Problem 1GST
To determine
The way in which the plants promote mechanical and chemical weathering when they inhibit erosion.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 1GST
The plants promote mechanical and chemical weathering by their extension of roots and chemical actions. But, they inhibit erosion by holding the soil tightly and are resistant to water flow and wind.
Explanation of Solution
Plants are associated with soil and regolith by extending their roots into the surface of the Earth. These roots bind the soil strongly to their surface. In the process, to attain minerals and nutrients, they extend roots into the rocks and wedges that are present in the soil.
Thus, they create fractures and break the rocks along their joints. Some plants, lichens, fungi, and so on, produce certain chemicals and acids, which breakdown the rocks by chemical processes.
