The Effects of Overusing Technology Technology is a powerful tool in today’s society. Most people own some sort of technology and use it on a daily basis, whether it be a cell phone, computer, GPS, or a tablet. Text messages, emails, apps like Snapchat, Skype, or FaceTime helps us stay connected to people far or near. Wireless internet has allowed internet access to any phone, or computer in reach. All these abilities are nice to be able to do at a fast pace, but we have to use them with caution. Young adults have been the most affected in our technological world. Most teens own a phone by the time they are in middle school if not before, and a laptop by the time they are in high school. “78% of teens now have a cell phone, and almost half (47%) of those own smartphones. That translates into 37% of all teens who have smartphones” (Madden). “Nine in ten (93%) teens have a computer or have access to one at home. Seven in ten (71%) teens with home computer access say the laptop or desktop they use most often is one they share with other family members” (Madden). Teenagers use these devices to communicate through texting and social media. Both these
The Internet is, quite literally, a network of networks. It is comprised of ten thousands of interconnected networks spanning the globe. The computers that form the Internet range from huge mainframes in research establishments to modest PCs in people's homes and offices. Despite the recent hype, the Internet is not a new phenomenon. Its roots lie in a collection of computers that were linked together in the 1970s to form the US Department of Defense's communications systems. Fearing the consequences of nuclear attack, there was no central computer holding vast amounts of data, rather the information was dispersed across thousands of machines. A set of rules, of protocols, known as TCP/IP was
For example, two families living on opposite sides of the world can now communicate using Skype, or any means of telecommunications application software in order to keep in touch and stay connected with one another. This technology does not come without its consequences; using technology to keep in touch with loved ones from afar has turned into communicating with another from across the room. Those mostly affected by the increasing usage of technology are adolescents. The Pew Research Center conducted a research titled “Teens and Technology 2013” (Madden et al., 2013). This report consist of data collected from not only adolescents ranging in age of 12 to 17 but also from the parents of those adolescents, where it is reported that 74% of “teens ages 12-17 say they access the internet on cell phones, tablets, and other mobile devices at least occasionally” (Madden et al.,

In 1973, Martin Cooper, executive at Motorola, created the thing that runs the lives of many ---- a cell phone. For those living under a rock, cell phones are portable telephones that requires cellular network (AT&T, Verizon and Tmobile) to make and receive phone calls. For the first time ever, a generation of kids are going through their adolescence with smartphones. Technology is the foundation of a teenager’s everyday life. It is hard for them, and myself, to imagine our lives without it. I am always on my cell for either work, communication, or entertainment, but sometimes it feels as if I am addicted to my cell phone, and I would say that my friends may even be worse. Even though I may be connected with everyone on social media, it’s hard to say I have a real connection with them in real life. Technology is unarguably one of the greatest achievements in history, but I think it has limits and restrictions on people’s social lives, including millennials. Technology hinders millennials from developing deep, meaningful relationships, gives them a false sense of reality, and creates impatience and lack of focus.

Large sections of society have the ability to travel whenever and to wherever they please, whether be it for pleasure or work. Communication with friends and family across the globe happens instantaneously with a simple click of a button. The movement of resources and products occurs around the world daily and items that were at one time based in a location across the globe can be delivered and on hand the next day. Global transportation, communication and trade create an immense network, which ultimately shrinks the world while at the same time expands our knowledge of other cultures and practices. This network allows people to connect on a worldwide scale; an idea that was not even conceivable a hundred years ago. The world has not always been the massive and interconnected society that it is today. Populations were often isolated by geography and economics. It has come a long way from the prehistoric times when communications were stories passed down by word of mouth and cave drawings and continues to flourish in a large variety of new and creative ways. From small tribes consisting of hunters and gatherers the world has morphed into a complex and interconnected group of diverse people that continue to discover new, revolutionary ways to improve life. (Copp, 2015) Humanity’s ingenuity and rapidly increasing need for information has propelled society on a quest that makes it increasing more dependent on technology and the many benefits
