People already know that rats are very disgusting creatures that live in sewers and eat trash. But these four articles introduced new insights to the problems that rats cause. Some of them include causing destructive infestations, horrible diseases that can harm or kill people and pets, and the danger of using pesticides to humans. The first reason and paragraph discusses what rat infestations are and why they occur, the second paragraph talks about the dangers to human society, and the third paragraph discusses the ways people are trying to rid their lives of rats.

New York City is one of the world's most known cities, it is known as the melting pot. New York City has a blend of cultures all in one city. From the statue of liberty, malls and sky scrapers to the parks and restaurants, there’s always something to do or see. But like any other city, crime does exist. With that being said people are starting to feel unsafe. Citizens are moving from the place they once called home. Most believe that there's life in a civil society where kids can grow safely, nourish and thrive off the environment.

In its long and illustrious history, New York City (NYC) has gone through tremendous change. From a small trading post on the tip of Manhattan Island, to the greatest metropolis in the world, NYC has continued to evolve over time. One period in particular that had more degrees of change than many others, was 1860 to 1865. The lives of the residents of the great port city would be completely changed forever.

New York City’s population is a little over 8.3 million people. 8.3 million people are spread out among five boroughs and each have their own set routine. Each one of those 8.3 million see New York in a different way becuase “You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it” (“City Limits” 4). Some people are like Colson Whitehead who “was born here and thus ruined for anywhere else” (“City Limits” 3). Others may have “moved here a couple years ago for a job. Maybe [they] came here for school” (“City Limits” 3). Different reasons have brought these people together. They are grouped as New Yorkers, but many times, living in New York is their only bond. New York City is just like every other major city in the United States. New York City crime rate is the main reason why people are moving out of the city that they call home. American’s believe that a civil decent society is a place where they can receive an education, and have access to things in life such a life, liberty and freedom. According to United States of America (1994), Public spaces are among New York City’s greatest assets. The city’s parks, playgrounds, streets, avenues, stoops and plazas are the forums that make possible the sense of vitality, excitement, and community that are the pulse of urban life. As time goes by these places have be ruined by environment problems such as eye sore graffiti, prostitution, unnecessary panhandling and people in the street intoxicated. When a city have these types of problems, the citizen feel as if they cannot protect their children because of the environment. Fear caused by disorder makes people leave the cities and communities that they reside in.

Traveling between the Bronx and Manhattan has allowed me to see that even though they are so close in distance, everyone is yet so far. Being raised in the Bronx has allowed me to gain a sense of home and recognition, but also how stereotypes are meant to deceive us. The Bronx is labeled as a dangerous place, where violence occurs, but people neglect the beauty and happiness that surrounds it too. Meanwhile, when people think of Manhattan, they see it as the heart of New York where everyone is living their dreams. When in reality, the “heart” of New York is much more distant from itself, and that is not just because it is on an island.

New York City has been in a constant state of change since the 1970’s. Evolving from a state of art and decrepitness to a glistening city of consumption. Yet in Jeremiah Moss’ book, Vanishing New York, the city did not “evolve” for the locals who breathed and lived in the city– the ones who made New York City the place to be, but rather for the big businesses who lure in the tourists who change the city into some kind of sister city to their middle American hometown. Moss uses the same ideas bell hooks wrote about in her “Eating the Other” essay, in that New Yorkers, the “other”, in all their artsy, queer, and ethnic ways are used to “spice up” the city, to make it a place worth coveting so that the rich and elite can sell a watered down/hollow

Given that, city rats are the same breed as a pet or lab rat, they can grow to about 16 inches and weigh up to a pound, moreover, their colonies can grow to 40 to 50 rats, and they have the habit of to travel in packs. In addition, when they reproduce, they can mate 20 times in six hours and female rats can give birth to 40 to 70 rats a year. Therefore, they are extremely difficult to kill and New York City, containing an underground subway system, empty lots, apartment complexes and lots of garbage, is the perfect environment for a massive reproduction of these undesirable animals.

Living in America is a fantasy for a lot of people, but living in New York City is something even better, and more magical than any fantasy.

New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low-income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City’s infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist’s areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low-income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low-income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.

The sounds of the city penetrated the walls of the cab as we drove through the streets of Manhattan. I could hardly wait to partake in the action that was happening outside. The buildings themselves were an amazing site to behold. The buildings took on personalities of their own. Each building was bigger and more graceful than the next. When lights were added to the mix it was a dazzling combination. The city itself felt like a great big hug, and I felt overwhelmed by its power. The city allowed me to become part of it just like many others many years ago who immigrated to this awesome city. Standing amongst the crowd of people gazing hopefully at the stage in the center of Times Square was a girl named Laina, standing bundled up outside in one of the busiest spots in New York. The announcer was preparing to hand out the grand prize for the contest she had entered in: an all-paid for cruise around the world--well, actually only to the Caribbean, but that was still good enough for Laina. With ports in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Bora Bora, Aruba...this had only been Laina’s dream since she was a toddler.

As someone walks over the grates in the sidewalk, they can feel the wind rush up from the subway cars flying through the tunnels. While they continue walking down the street and looking at all the different people that they pass, they can smell the hotdogs being cooked in the food truck. In the distance, they hear a siren weaving through the congested narrow streets of this busy city. New York City is a one of a kind type of place. It is the only place in the world where so many different cultures and backgrounds are all in one place. Along with the multitudes of different types of people and cultures, New York City truly is the city that never sleeps. The city that never sleeps, New York City, is full sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and feels.

Ever since I can remember I have had a fascination with New York City, partly because the way that the movies have portrayed it as being almost magical and full of endless possibilities way but mostly because I love large cities. Although I live near Glasgow which could be considered to be a large city I don’t think it has the same allure as NYC.
