A debate on whether education is still the driving factor to success in the 21st century has been blooming for some time now which has many of us asking, “Is education still necessary for one to succeed nowadays?” This issue of whether education still holds that value of being the primary aspect of achieving success is of particular interest because it could mean that it could potentially create depreciation in the demand for education in the future, and money spent on acquiring an education could be used to pursue entrepreneurial ventures. According to Tracy (2012), your character; one of ambition and drive to excel, pushes you on an onward path towards success because the more an individual desires to exceed, he will put into play the actions that will guarantee that level of success. In fact, this same evidence points to how Jamaica’s businessman extraordinaire Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart became successful. It was not financial assets through a family heir loom or education; but, it was his continued zeal for creating an empire based upon innovative marketing ideas and expounding upon those ideas which made his chain of businesses into the success they are today. In addition to one’s drive to exceed, one’s moral and sociable character is a guaranteed pillar upon which success can be based. Indeed, a study from the Journal of Happiness Studies indicated that character strengths – especially zest, perseverance, hope, and curiosity – play a key role in ambitious work behaviour (Gander, Proyer, Ruch, & Wyss, 2012). Although many critics within the academic world will oppose by saying that character and self-esteem are taught through academia, I firmly reject that stance as a child’s first point of contact in terms of socialization is at home, with one’s family and community. This means that a child is first taught, at home, the character traits that will help him excel regardless of the impact school has on him. Character
Alex Tabarrok once said, “Education is the key to the future: You’ve heard it a million times, and it’s not wrong. Educated people have higher wages and lower unemployment rates, and better-educated countries grow faster and innovate more than other countries. But going to college is not enough. You also have to study the right subjects” (Reich par. 5). This quote is a very popular quote because it is a true to connection to education. The general assumption about college consists of how important it is to personal success, our future, and our general lives. As technology evolves and the price of higher education increases, alternatives to College are considered. Some people don’t believe a college education is necessary to be successful. Instead, they decide to go into business for themselves, using the skills and crafts that they 've developed on their own time to become entrepreneurs. In this day and age, it is easier than ever to learn from the comfort of ones home and actually get a degree in something with a high pay out, such as a real estate license or accounting degrees. The articles “Blue-Collar Brilliance” written by Mike Rose and “Are Too Many People Going to College?” by Charles Murray discuss the importance of education and its outcomes. Both authors talk about people’s careers on the aspect of whether a college degree made them succeed in life or it is just an expensive waste of time. Also, each article has its own opinion over the fact that some people with college education aren’t able to find jobs while others with no college background are able to succeed. Rose and Murray, both agreed on the idea that college isn’t for all just simply because of its cost, and how each person’s intelligence does not depend on their acceptance to a college; further, both authors also acknowledge the importance of blue-collar workers and their prosperity.
Education is today more critical than ever. College has become virtually a precondition for upward mobility. Men with only a high school diploma earn about a fifth less than they did 35 years ago. Many recent college graduates have faced record levels of unemployment. This situation has lead people to question what they value about higher education. Some high school students and their parents are wondering if a college education is worth the cost. Others, however, believe that a college prepares students for more than just a job or career. Many people then present the counter argument that people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg did not have a college degree, but unlike them most people are not geniuses and do not have the same entrepreneurial opportunities available to them, let alone the innovative ideas and proper timing. A college education is worth the cost because it is a requirement for many jobs, college graduates make substantially more than high school graduates, and college provides more opportunities for personal growth and networking.

When investigating the importance of home schooling to children, one must see the pros and cons associated with educating the child at home. The cons of teaching children at home are evident when looking at the child’s social life and future educational career.
