Week 4 Discussion Forum For this week's discussion, we will be looking at local or national response protocols that were initiated during a disaster, and you will choose your topic! (Remember the discussion in week one about what signifies a disaster, not just a local emergency.) Search for the following types of man-made disasters: hostage situation disasters, mass shooting disasters, multiple-vehicle or mass transit disasters with multiple critical injuries, and epidemics/pandemics. (Searching "after action report" for your disaster will assist you in answering all of the questions.) In your initial post, describe the incident and address the following: Determine the incident type and explain your reasoning (types of incidents can be found hereLinks to an external site.). What resources were deployed for this incident? What protocols were implemented successfully during the incident, and which were unsuccessful? Discuss ways to improve the response to this type of incident in the future. Determine the incident type and explain your reasoning. What resources were deployed for this incident? Hi Class, The Uvalde school shooting is among the deadliest incidents at a public school in Texas. A mass shooting that took place at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022 (COPS, n.d.). Classified as a mass shooting since the perpetrator killed two teachers and 19 children with his gunshots. Many people were let down by the resources used in this catastrophe, particularly the children whose lives were lost. According to Despart (2022), the most horrific school massacre in Texas history was unavoidable due to "systemic failings and blatant poor decision making" by almost all those in positions of power. For over an hour, law enforcement officers entered the school in a chaotic manner (Despart, 2022). The group lacked sufficient urgency, sound leadership, and basic communication to stop the gunman. Looking into the future, being better organized, having a plan in place and following it as swiftly yet accurately as possible, and, subsequently, improving communication to be on the same page and not miss anything, are methods to improve the reaction to mass shootings like this one. I believe that these children were truly let down by the system and the police, who seemed more interested in protecting themselves than in ensuring the victims' protection. The depressing thing
about it all is that no one intervened despite the gunman's obvious warnings long before the attack. Despite warning indications that the gunman, Salvador Ramos, might be planning a violent attack and was unstable, authorities were not notified of any of these warnings (Despart, 2022). Indeed, implementing efficient response protocols is critical to reducing the effects of such natural disasters on both health and societal stability. Your mention of it makes me think about how important it is to have protocols and be adaptable and sensitive to changing conditions. According to Johnson et al. (2020), the COVID-19 pandemic required swift modifications to previously established protocols, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and decision-making in addressing crises. While response methods are critical in disaster management, their effectiveness depends on adaptability, equity, and collaboration. We may better prepare for future problems and protect our communities' well-being by critically reviewing and revising these protocols based on empirical facts and lessons learned from previous crises.
