ENGG 3070 Integrated Manufacturing Systems Introduction to Production Systems September 8 th , 2023 Prepared by Dr. Mohamed El Hamahmy
Manufacturing: What and Why Manufacturing is the creation of useful goods from raw materials, typically for commercial purposes. In Canada: Manufacturing was the third-largest industry in 2022 in terms of GDP growth [1] . Ontario accounted for about 43% of manufacturing sales in Canada in 2022 [2] . 1- Statista Research Department. Canada: real value added in GDP 2022, by industry . 2- Statistics Canada. Table 16-10-0048-01 Manufacturing sales by industry and province, monthly (dollars unless otherwise noted) (x 1,000) Prepared by M. El Hamahmy
Manufacturing: What and Why In Ontario: Manufacturing was the second-largest industry in 2021 by GDP [1] . Accounted for about 10% of employment in Ontario in 2021 [2] . 1- Statista Research Department. GDP distribution of Ontario, Canada 2021, by industry . 2- Statistics Canada. Manufacturing: What and Why Manufacturing is a crucial component of the domestic (and global) economy. Manufacturing is also essential to sustaining a modern lifestyle. Therefore Globalization* Need for perpetual economic growth Increasing complexity of industrial/consumer products However, there is a constant need to manufacture goods more efficiently due to: * ”Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdepen den t place.” – National Geographic . This need for efficiency has given rise to present-day production systems . This course is all about these systems of production, what they entail, and how they are managed. Prepared by M. El Hamahmy
Production Systems A production system is the collection of people, equipment, and procedures organized to accomplish manufacturing operations. It consists of two broad components: - Facilities the factory , production equipment , material handling and inspection equipment and computer systems that control manufacturing operations. E.g., Lathe machines, angle grinder, jig saw . - Manufacturing support systems the procedures used by a company to manage production and to solve technical and logistic problems in ordering materials , moving work through the factory , and quality assurance . E.g., Pinhole inspection units, billing system, inventory control system . Prepared by M. El Hamahmy
Production System Facilities The factory , production equipment , material handling and inspection equipment and computer systems that control manufacturing operations. We classify these as: a) Manufacturing systems logical groupings of equipment and workers in the factory. These can be: Individual work cells ; A single production machine and worker assigned to it. Collections of machines and workers , such as a production line. b) Plant layout the way the equipment is physically arranged in the factory. Prepared by M. El Hamahmy
