The Difference Between Multiprocessors And Multicore Multicore and multiprocessor are words that are often brought up in the world of technology, however, there is often a bit of confusion about what does what because of the similarities of the name. I think it is important to understand the difference between these and the different setups that each of them uses when it relates to parallel processing. Each of these processors does different sets of instructions and they both have a separate local memory. Getting into the Multiprocessor System, this specific type of system does just what is says, it has several CPUs (Central Processing Units), also known as processors. (Rana, 2023) These CPUs each operate single-handedly and each has its own memory resources. What makes this system works well is that if a CPU was to fail the remaining will continue to work, which will help to make the system more dependable. Overall, because they work together, they allow for an enhanced processing power. Because of this system and the way that it work, multiprocessor systems can handle a ton of tasks all at the same time. On the other hand of this, multicore systems have a single CPU, but this one CPU has several cores, also known as separating processing units. (Patro, 2023) Each of these cores can do their own thing, meaning that they can work and execute instructions independently, where they share the same memory, and cache. Where multicore differs significantly is that they us the individual cores and crank up the system processing power. This is how they approach parallel processing compared to the multiprocessor system. For this reason, multicore systems are known to be more power-efficient systems. As someone learning more about multicore and multiprocessors, I can see why learning the difference is key for us to understand how the different systems work. Because while both of
the system's main goal is to make sure that the computing performance is enhanced through parallel processing, they both have different contributions and different CPUs allowing for this enhancement. Understanding this allows for someone to select the right system for their specific needs in computing and applications.
