Name: Kyle Alexander Feedback on Learning Tasks Directions: View Praising the Process video. Respond to the questions below. 1. Why does Ms. Stewart focus on the process versus the product? She prefers to focus on what they did successfully to accomplish their goal rather than just their end product. This goes back to her growth mindset and belief that this will help the students accomplish their goals. 2. How does focusing on the process impact the language used by students in the class? It allows students to focus on what they are doing well and then use that language and knowledge to help their peers in group work. 3. Which of the Six Rules of Thumb does Ms. Stewart follow when giving feedback? Although I feel like she utilizes all six rules of thumb, in the video I specifically noticed: recognizing good performance, focus on quality rather than quantity of student work accomplished, and give students opportunities to express what they believe the feedback means and how feedback translates into what students must do to improve. Her constant praise definitely met the 3:1 ratio that is desired and her ability to provide specific feedback related to their process will really help the students succeed. 4. How does the feedback on process impact Ms. Stewart’s classroom culture? What is the evidence? It clearly has a positive impact on her classroom culture. It’s obvious in the way the children act and respond to her methods. They are always smiling and happy and looking for ways to change or improve their work.
5. How does the student respond to Ms. Stewart when she gives the suggestion for improvement ( So I was thinking, something you might start trying …”)? Why do you think the student reacted this way? The student appears to be excited about the suggestion to improve her story and I think this goes back to the authentic and specific praise she received from her teacher. 6. Why is it critical to make praise authentic? Being authentic with praise towards students is important because it allows students to genuinely feel good about what they have done, and it instills in them a sense of pride. It also serves to create a positive connection/relationship with the student that will make them feel more comfortable taking academic risks in the future.
